SERVICES OFFERED
At present I am extremely busy but am always willing to consider any particularly interesting project.
Chess Tuition
I offer private/small group chess tuition, but at present I can only take on pupils who are prepared to travel to me (I live in Whitton, Twickenham) or who live within easy reach. There are two categories of children I am interested in teaching on a one-to-one basis: children who are taking part in tournament chess on a regular basis, or who are interested in doing so, and children who have specific social reasons for wanting to learn or study chess. Please consult the
ARTICLES page, and, if you are still interested, tell me something really interesting about your child when you
contact me. I am also interested in trialling the
Steps System of teaching chess which is used extensively in Holland and Belgium as well as elsewhere i n Western Europe. This requires groups of at least four children and a committment, for the first step, to a course lasting one year. Again,
contact me if you're interested.
Chess Teaching in Schools
From September 2010 onwards I shall be available to run structured chess courses (NOT chess clubs) in schools. These courses can be based either on the
chessKIDS academy course or, if you prefer, the
Steps System. I will only be available to teach in schools in my immediate area, but can provide informal consultancy for schools in other areas.
Other Teaching
I have a
certificate in teaching children with dyslexia, and am considering further study should time and other projects allow. In principle, I am interested in any projects involving working with children with dyslexia, dyscalculia or other learning difficulties. I am also working on a project which involves the teaching of Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, and also looks at how chess and other strategy games can be incorporated into this, and also into the mathematics curriculum in schools. I am interested in any one-to-one or small group teaching along these lines, especially anything involving working with 'different' children.
Editing/Proof Reading
I have strong literacy skills and a wide knowledge of chess so am able to offer this service on any project not requiring a high degree of chess playing skill. I recently worked as the English Language consultant on the
Harry Potter Chess Course, and edited the new edition of
The Right Way to Play Chess, originally written by David Pritchard in 1950.
Controlling/Arbiting
No formal qualifications but many years experience controlling/arbiting, particularly in Junior Tournaments.
